This morning we had our first recognition assembly, where we got together with the rest of the Grade 3 and Grade 4 classes to recognize a few students from each class for being good citizens of BWCS - in our class, I recognized Henry, Jordan, Liam, Markyian, and Drew for making our classroom and school a better place to be every day. My latest read: ‘Run, Hide, Repeat’ by Pauline Dakin. Pauline Dakin spent her childhood on the run. Without warning, her mother twice uprooted her and her brother, moving thousands of miles away from family and friends. She was told, years later, that it was because they were on the run from the Mafia, but as she began to become more and more suspicious, she discovered that the truth was even stranger than that. My latest read: ‘What Does This Button Do?’ by Bruce Dickinson. Bruce is the lead singer of Iron Maiden, one of my favourite bands, but he’s done so much more than that: he’s a world-class fencer, airline captain, novelist, screenwriter, cancer survivor, and so much more. I was aware of most of these things, but it wasn’t until reading his book that I learned just how many different interests and pursuits Bruce has had outside of being the lead singer of one of biggest rock bands of all-time. Today we read ‘Dreamers’ by Yuyi Morales. It’s a story about the author moving from Mexico to the United States with her infant son. She didn’t know any English, but everything changed when she discovered the amazing world of the public library. We had a lot of great conversation around this book and what it must be like for families moving here to Canada not speaking any English, including some in our very own class. We also talked about how using the pictures to read a book can help us make sense of the story, even if we can’t read the words. Here’s some of the student’s work from another 3-act math problem that we played with on Monday and Tuesday - we knew from our observations that were 12 coins in a coin bank and that the total amount was $1.00, and we knew for sure that there was at least one nickel, one dime, and (almost certainly) one quarter in the bank. I’m sorry that I forgot to take a picture of the rest of their observations and thinking that I wrote down on the board, because they had such good ideas - I absolutely love the mathematical conversations that I get to hear while they are trying to figure these problems out. Here’s the latest book I’ve read - it’s the autobiography of Duff, the bassist from Guns ‘N Roses, Velvet Revolver, and Loaded. I really enjoy reading autobiographies to see how different the lives of others have been from my own (and Duff’s has been a lot different - lol), and to learn how others have overcome challenges and obstacles in their lives. Spent part of my #maylong weekend finally reading this (it had been sitting on my ‘to read’ pile for a while). A very interesting autobiography about a player I had vague recollections of (a) scoring a lot of goals, (b) playing for some very bad teams, and (c) having one of the best mustaches in pro sports history.
