It was a bit of a dreary day, and it was raining for part of the day, but we still managed to get out for the #30x30challenge. We had planned to go on a walk in the community, but with the threat of thunderstorms looming, we had to stick close to school instead. Students walked on the track, played basketball, or played with the scoops. We went out after lunch with Ms. Petersen's class for the #30x30challenge to continue working on the art we started the other day, while the rest of the class played on the play structure and swings (I love that our school still has a swing set - that's 'old school' fun!). For our #30x30challenge today, we had the pleasure of attending the annual divisional folk dance festival. The Grade 1 to 3 students have been learning different folk dances in Phys. Ed. classes the past few weeks, and today (and yesterday) most of the schools in our division got together to perform the dances. Once again, we went outside today for the #30x30challenge. We listened to Ms. Petersen read 'Little Cloud' by Eric Carle to us. After that, we looked at the clouds - with our Grade 1 buddies, we drew what we saw in the clouds and we wrote about it. We saw all kinds of different shapes in the sky. The clouds changed into different kinds of shapes - they do that a lot. After that we went inside and shared with our classmates what we saw outside. We finished our #tomatosphere research project today. We found that there was virtually no difference in germination between the seeds that spent time in space and the seeds that stayed on earth. The students were excited to each get a personalized certificate, as well as getting to take home one of the tomato plants. Combining space research and plants - it doesn't get much better than that! We had rain today, so we had to change up our plans a bit, as some of the students weren't properly dressed for the weather. However, the rain lightened up for a bit, so we went outside and ran to the soccer net and back as hard as we could over and over, to show how you can still have fun outside in the rain. The students have been working hard on meeting our school expectations by being safe, respectful, and responsible... and earned a class party as a result. The party was today, which is #starwars day (#maythe4thbewithyou), so we had a Star Wars-themed party, where we ate Star Wars snacks and watched the original Star Wars movie (Episode IV: A New Hope) in the school theatre. Many of the kids had never seen it before, and it got resounding reviews from the students. Today is #musicmonday! To celebrate, this morning we went to TCI (Transcona Collegiate Institute) to sing a couple of songs. There were five other schools there: John W. Gunn, Joseph Teres, Radisson (Mr. H's old school!), Westview, and TCI. Some schools brought choirs and others brought bands. We sang three songs: Do The Good You Know, I Won't Grow Up, and Music Is Always There (the last one was sung with all of the schools). In the afternoon, we did #musicmonday back at BWCS with the whole school outside. Different classes took turns singing different songs, and we finished off with everyone singing 'BWCS' (sung to the tune of 'YMCA').
