Making stronger structures

We used straws and stick pins to make a square, a triangle, a hexagon, and a pentagon. There was a paper of ideas of how to make our straw shapes strong. - Lexi
Today in Music, we got our tenth checkmark. We got to play three games, because we got ten checkmarks. One of them was 'drum and freeze' game, another was 'pass the Boomwhacker', and the last one was a troll game. - Logan

We continued working on our 'Structures and Materials' unit in Science today. The challenge for the students today was to build different shapes out of straws and stick pins, and then to try to make them more stable by adding in braces. The students started off by building a square, and quickly noticed that if they held the square up with one hand, it didn't stay in the shape of a square. It didn't take the students long to figure out (on their own) that if they could brace the square with one or two straws, it'd be a lot stronger. Here's some of the ideas they came up with:
