The latest from our class Instagram account - working on place value

Check out the Grade 5 Math my students were crushing this morning! via Instagram http://ift.tt/1L3sXW2

The latest from our class Instagram account - Read-to-self: 14 minutes

The students continue to work on building up their read-to-self stamina - they made it up to 14 minutes today, and were so quiet that the teacher next door didn't even realize there were students in the class until she walked in on them reading! Great job, boys and girls! via Instagram http://ift.tt/1KxW6mM

The latest from our class Instagram account - #igniteywg

I was fortunate to spend yesterday evening connecting with and learning from a group of really great educators and students! #Repost @mbteachers with @repostapp. ・・・ What happens when you put a few dozen Manitoba teachers together to present fast-paced Ignite presentations? Lots of great PD and one incredible #igniteywg evening! Thanks to Dean Shareski from Discovery Education for hosting and Andy McKiel for organizing a wonderful night. #mbedchat #edchat #cdnedchat #mtslearning #discoveryeducation via Instagram http://ift.tt/1Mod2Px

The first two days of school

Well... we've done it - we've made it through 2 days of school already! I can't believe how quickly the time has flown by. It's been very exciting to start at a new school, and to meet a great new group of students! I asked them what they have enjoyed about the first couple of days back, and here's what they had to say:

We like to learn. - Tom
I like meeting new people. - Megan
I like seeing my friends. - Angelina
We liked meeting our new Music teacher. - Heldana
We got to pick our seats on the first day. - Riley
This year has already been good because I really like doing the Math. - Kishi
I really love going to the gym. - Ivan

For most of the students, this is the first time they've ever posted on a blog before, which is really exciting for me - I'm looking forward to being able to share our year in the classroom with our readers. Stay tuned for more!

A new chapter

As I write this, I sit in my new classroom in my new school, setting it up for the upcoming school year... and feeling antsy and somewhat surreal. It's hard to sum up the 9 years I've been at Radisson, other than to say that it's been great and it's flown by. Thank you to all of my former students and their families for allowing me the privilege of teaching them... and I think it's safe to say that I learned just as much from them (and maybe more) as they did from me! Thanks also to those of you who, even though we didn't interact directly at school, read the blog and commented from time to time - your contributions helped the students (and I) to connect with the larger world outside the walls of Radisson School.

So, as I get ready to embark on the next chapter in my career at a new school, I think it's obvious that I can't continue to use 'Radisson's Rockin' Room 18' for my blog, as (a) I'm not at Radisson School anymore, and (b) I'm not in Room 18 anymore. Hence, you might have noticed a change in the URL and the title for this blog - it's now called Mr. Hoeppner's Class and the address is http://mrhoeppnersclass.blogspot.ca/ - please spread the word.

Thanks again, everybody, and have a great 2015-16 school year!

Conscious Kindness! #kindWPG #kindnessmatters #WpgWed

As part of the 50th anniversary of United Way Winnipeg, people are being encouraged to commit acts of 'conscious kindness' today. We talked about this as a class, and brainstormed some ideas of what we could do today - here's what we came up with:

Let someone have my stuffy (Douglas) for a day - Eric S.
Ask someone if they want to join in at soccer. - Brady
Ask a friend who I haven't seen for a while to come over after school. - Avery
I won't get upset when someone hits rope in tetherball, and won't leave the game. - Morgan
This afternoon at the corner store, I will tell the clerk to keep the change. - Tyrell
I will gather up toys and clothes that I don't need anymore for the Goodwill store. - Nolan
I will give put-ups and compliments to my family and friends. - Matthew
I am going to put a sticky note on my neighbour's door with a good message, and a little treat. Braedon
I'm going to read my little siblings favourite book to them. - Faith
I'll help someone practice their recorder at recess. - Connor
I'm going to make hot dog fettuccine Alfredo for my family today. - Kayleigh
I'm going to be a good neighbour today by cleaning their yard. - Emma
I will be kind to my family by going downstairs and not being annoying to my sister. - Robert
I'm going to help my mom when she has to take the dogs out, and feed them. - Jaida
I will help a classmate to clean up. - Avery
I will help my mom with the laundry. - Sara
I'm going to let someone cut in front of me at tetherball. - Albert
I paid for the coffee of the person behind me in the drive-through this morning, and at lunch, I'm going to Tim Hortons and I'll round up my purchase, and that money will go to help underprivileged kids go to camp. - Mr. H.

After we brainstormed our list, the students took sticky notes to create notes of kindness to spread around the school - here are some of them:

Room 18's NHL Playoff bracket challenge update #3

As you read in an earlier post, we used our Stanley Cup Playoffs predictions to help us learn about fractions, decimals, and percents. As a class, we are having a friendly competition to see who is the most accurate in picking the winners, all the way to the Stanley Cup. For each first round series picked correctly, 1 point is awarded. 2 points are awarded if they correctly pick the second round winners, 3 points for 3 round winners, and 4 points for picking the correct Stanley Cup winner. Now that the third round is complete, here are the updated standings (and it continues to be a tight race!):
