We ended off the day today by having a sharing circle in our outdoor classroom, where the students (and adults) of 3A and 3B shared their favourite learning memories from our old classroom spaces. Some of their responses were: - getting to work on the laptops and the iPad - Prodigy math game - using manipulatives in Math class - writing Christmas poems - blogging - number of the day - regrouping in subtraction - coding - learning to tell time - writing - helping others with their work - growing as mathematicians - daily edits - reading and learning new words - the days just flying by - seeing students’ joy when they’ve worked hard to understand a new concept via Instagram https://ift.tt/2rJp1nB

This morning we started doing some learning around treaty education with Ms. Smith - she began by talking about where her ancestors came from, and encouraged the class to find out where their ancestors came from, so that we can share that with each other the next time we meet. She also told us an amazing story about an encounter with an eagle that she had as a child - the students we riveted by her story, and can’t wait to meet with her again on Thursday! via Instagram https://ift.tt/2PPrSpl

The latest from our class Instagram account - our new chairs (finally) came!
Two months after our new tables came in, we finally got the matching chairs - the students were super-excited when they saw them! It will be so nice to have a uniform set of tables and chairs, so that students aren’t consistently concerned with getting a chair that’s not too big or not too small for their table (we had 5 different sizes/types of chairs, many which were original to the school’s opening in 1977). Many thanks to our principal, Ms. Linton, for making this happen! via Instagram https://ift.tt/2GZne2F

Yesterday we had our annual grade 3-5 track and field day. It was a glorious day to be outside (especially after I spent the last two days of last week inside at meetings)! It was a bit of a cool and windy day today, so we decided to keep warm for the #onenaturechallenge. The grade 3s and Ms. Petersen’s Grade 1s partnered up to predict him many laps they could complete in our time outside, and then worked to see how many they could actually walk/run. Many of the students surprised themselves by completing more laps than they initially predicted! via Instagram https://ift.tt/2jKjgBP
The latest from our class Instagram account - Neil Flambe and the Aztec Abduction
This is ‘Neil Flambé and the Aztec Abduction’. It’s the second book in the Neil Flambé series by @sylvesterartwork. It takes place in Mexico, where Neil travels to compete in a battle of the chefs. His older cousin Larry (who is also his Sous Chef) comes with him to help him try to win the contest, but he also helps Neil by using his knowledge of Mexico to help save their friend Isabella Tortellini, who has been kidnapped. We really like Larry’s character because he’s extremely funny, and he’s a coffee addict! Currently, there are six books in the #neilflambe series... so far - here’s hoping there’s a seventh one on the way soon! 🤞🏻 - the students of 3B via Instagram https://ift.tt/2I9eDfi

What a great afternoon to get outdoors for the #onenaturechallenge! The latest from our class Instagram account - Neil Flambe and the Marco Polo Murders
This is ‘Neil Flambé and the Marco Polo Murders’. It’s the first book in the Neil Flambé series by @sylvesterartwork. We love the Neil Flambé books because Neil is such a great character. He is so enthusiastic about cooking (he’s only 14 years old in the first book AND he has his own restaurant), partly because he has such an amazing sense of smell. His sense of smell not only helps him in the kitchen, but also allows him to help Vancouver police inspector Sean Nakamura solve crimes. We think you should read the Neil Flambé books because they’re really good books and they will knock your socks off! Currently, there are six books in the series - here’s hoping there’s a seventh one on the way! 🤞🏻 (the students of 3B) #neilflambe via Instagram https://ift.tt/2jIdyAF

For the #onenaturechallenge on Monday, we went outside with the rest of the school for #musicmonday to sing a few songs, led by Ms. Ferley - what a gorgeous day for it! #latergram via Instagram https://ift.tt/2IqwRw4
(note: We did make it outside for an extra-long recess on Friday, May 4th, despite the absence of a photo on the blog. We celebrated #maythefourthbewithyou by watching Star Wars: Episode IV (A New Hope) in the afternoon, but we made sure to get outside for an extra 30 minutes for Day 3 of the #onenaturechallenge school challenge in the morning. Yesterday was our first day of the #OneNatureChallenge (also known as the #30x30challenge), where people are encouraged to spend 30 minutes a day in nature for 30 days, in order to reconnect people with nature for the sake of their health and mental well-being. We started by reading with our friends in Ms. Petersen’s class. You can find out more about the challenge by checking out @davidsuzukifdn. via Instagram https://ift.tt/2jrophW

The latest from our class Instagram account - tweeting with an author!
This morning, we finished reading ‘Neil Flambé and the Duel in the Desert’ by Kevin Sylvester (@sylvesterartwork). We began reading the six-book series when school started, way back in September, and the students have loved them - they’ve become really invested in the characters, both through Sylvester’s great writing, as well as his fantastic sketches that he sprinkles throughout his books. The sixth book is the last one of the series that’s been published, and the students were wondering if he was working on another one (especially because it ends with such a cliffhanger!). ‘Well... let’s tweet him!’, I said, so we worked as a class to compose a tweet, and then posted it. We moved on to Math, but twelve minutes later, I heard my computer ‘bing’, and it was a reply from Mr. Sylvester to our tweet! He directed us to a blog post, and basically indicated that the situation is similar to where the third book in his #MINRS series (which is coming out later this month) was a year ago - the draft was written, but no go-head from the publishers to publish it, until more of the earlier books of the series sold. The students immediately started brainstorming ways of ‘getting the word out’ about how awesome Neil and all of his adventures are - it looks like I might have an unplanned persuasive writing unit on my hands! Love it! (PS The Neil Flambé books are awesome - I love them, too!) via Instagram https://ift.tt/2HFzsTr

The latest from our class Instagram account - studying Woodland Art
Over the past few weeks, we’ve continued working on our storytelling unit with @mscasselsclass and Ms. Dodds. We’ve been spending a lot of time studying Woodland style of art (here, we are looking at some of the works of Norval Morrisseau), and have been practicing some sketching in that style. The students will soon be creating their own original works of art to accompany the stories they’ve been creating - it’s been so wonderful to see how enthusiastic our classes have been about the learning that has gone into these activities, and we can hardly wait to see what they create! via Instagram http://ift.tt/2DHGKiO

Today we went to the Burton Cummings Theatre for 'I Love To Read - Live'. While we were waiting for it to begin, DJ Blitz played music while Goldie, Buzz & Boomer, and Mick E. Moose pumped up the crowd. Next, Ace Burpee, Chrissy Troy, LTI, some of this other friends from Virgin Radio Winnipeg, and Rahim and Nicole from CTV Morning Live read the book 'The Circus Ship' to us. Next, Mayor Brian Bowman read 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to School...' to us. Finally, Fred Penner came out on stage and sang a couple of songs to us, including 'The Cat Came Back'. It was amazing@ - Mr. H's Grade 3 students
